‘Kumro Bori’ gains popularity in Chuadanga

A large number of women in rural and urban areas have become self-reliant as they are earning money by producing and selling Kumro Bori overcoming poverty in the winter season in four upazilas of Chuadanga district.

A huge quantity of Kumro Bori is being produced at village Gobindopur and Kalidashpur in Alamdanga upazila, Daulatdiar, Masterpara and Sumiddia in Sadar upazila of the district. 

At present a large number of women are producing Kumro Bori commercially and they sell these to different kitchen traders and grocery businessmen in the district.

Khokon, a producer of Kumro Bori at Masterpara in the town, said, “There is a huge demand of Kumro Bori in the district this season. We can’t supply according to the demand of buyers.”   

Jahanar Khatun of Majhhad area in Alamdanga upazila of the district said that she has been earning Tk 6,000 per month selling Kumro Bori. She has been making the item for last 10 years.

Rejaul Hoque, a producer of Kumro Bori at Sumiddia in Sadar upazila of the district, said, “Female members of his family and neighbours have been making Kumro Bori and selling it at Boro Bazaar Kitchen Market. 

Hundreds of women of Sadar upazila, Alamdanga upazila, Damurhuda upazila and Jibannagar upazila have turned their hobby into profession by commercially making the Bori. 

Most of the females in the district town are engaged in making Kumro Bori as. They are preparing it on the roof of their buildings or on the premises of their houses. It is a common scene in the area. Children were also seen helping their mothers, sisters and others. 

Mashkolai pulse, white pumpkin or papya and water are used for making Kumro Bori. The pulses need to be soaked in water for one night so their skins come off easily. The soaked pulses with smashed white pumpkin or papaya and water are mixed through mixture machine. Mixture Machines have been set up at different points of the district. Then the mixture is turned into mold manually for making Bori and put Boris on bamboo-made Chalon or wire nets for drying up in sun, said Moriom Ara Mollik, a Kumro Bori maker in the town.   

The Mashkolai is being purchased by the Bori makers at Tk 135 per kg in the markets and haats. On the other hand, pumpkin is bought by them at Tk 40 to 150 per piece according to its sizes.

It may be mentioned that the Kumro Bori of the areas is very soft and tasty. So city dwellers and buyers of different areas purchase Kumro Bori from the area. 

This correspondent visited in Boro Bazaar Kitchen Market in the town and found that each kilogram of kumro bori is being sold at Tk 340 to Tk 360 based on their quality and taste.

It was also learnt that most of women members of the families in the district have been making Kumro Bori for their families as curry from the eve of winter season. Shamsun Nahar of Dakkhin Haspatalpara in the town said we made Kumro Bori by ourselves to ensure purity and taste.  

Umme Atika Mollik, Nutritionist and Health Educator of Chuadanga Diabetic Hospital, told the Bangladesh Post, “This bori contains Vitamins, Minerals, Carbohydrate and Fiber. There are several benefits of having the food as it helps build physical strength, remove contraption, control diabetics, increase digestion and so on.
