The results of last year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations have seen a 100% pass rate as the results were graded without holding the exams due to Covid-19 pandemic.

A record number of students got GPA 5 in last year's HSC and for the first time in the country’s history, everyone who registered for the HSC would be given a certificate, thanks to efforts of the government that is eventually going to help the students continue their academic life. Indeed, the prudent decision to publish the result without holding examination amid Covid-19 has saved a precious academic year from being wasted. Now what is needed is to introduce and incorporate such a university admission test system which has the true potential evaluate the students’ merit.

We need to be careful about making futile comments

on the last year’s HSC and equivalent

exam for the welfare of our future leaders

Government's decision to publish the result of last year's HSC examination based on JSC and SSC examinations was a bold, courageous and timely one. It was indeed a tough task for the authorities concerned to evaluate the students’ merit without holding examinations and in this regard it is worth mentioning that the government had to amend three laws to be able to publish the HSC results without exams.

As it has not been possible to publish the results by holding the exams under the previous legal framework the results have been published after coordinating 75 percent of the SSC and 25 percent from the JSC-JDC results.

While announcing the results of last year's HSC and equivalent exams Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina rightly asked the critics of the results of last year's HSC and equivalent exams to refrain from unnecessary criticisms. It needs no emphasising that negative comments regarding the results will put psychological pressure on the students who are already under huge mental pressure due to the closure of educational institutions for a long time. Therefore, we need to be careful about making futile comments on last year’s HSC and equivalent exams for the welfare of our future leaders.
