KU remembers Katka Tragedy victims

Authorities of Khulna University observed the Katka Tragedy Day on the campus with due solemnity and fervour on Friday. The day was observed with mourning rally, wearing of black badges, placing of floral tributes at Katka Memorial, mourning meeting, lightning of the lamp, exhibition of documentaries and seeking prayers at the university mosque and at the temple. 

On this ominous day of 2004, a total of 11 students including nine students of the Architecture Discipline of KU and two students of BUET were killed by drowning in the sea while visiting Katka in the Sunderbans. KU observed the day as the Mourning Day of the University every year since after the tragic incident. 

In observance of the day, the campus of the varsity was decorated in black shrouds elsewhere and both sides of the roads from the main gate of the campus  through Hadi Chattar to Katka Memorial plaque. Wooden statues of the deceased students were also exhibited at various places of the campus. 

Professor Dr. Fayekuzzaman, Vice Chancellor of Khulna University led a mourning procession by wearing black shrouds at the campus which ended at the foot  Katka Memorila plaque. Among others, teachers and students of various educational institutions including Chhaya Britto School, disciplines of KU including Architecture, various halls, Khulna University Teachers Association, various Teachers bodies, Swadhinota Shikkhok Parihsad, Bangabandhu parishad and various students and professional organisations of KU paid tribute to the deceased soul. A one minute silence was also observed in memory of the deceased students.
