Kishoreganj duck farm creates hope for unemployed people

Kishoreganj Regional Duck Breeding Farm started December, 1981 at Bogadia area of Sadar upazila with 6 sheds on 3 acres. About 45,000 ducks are produced every year from this farm and about 86,000 are egg produced. These babies and eggs go to different regions of the country. The history of the employment of thousands of unemployed people is written in it.

Visiting Kishoreganj Regional Duck Breeding Farm this correspondent found, there are 10 shades with hatchery (baby boom). Each shade is very good in quality. This is very useful for poultry production.

The farm produces different types of poultry. Physical structure of the duck much larger than other ducks. It is important to note that The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took decision to rebuilt Kishoreanj Regional Duck Farm with 14 farms across the country. On December 1996, chicken farming was terminated at the farm for fear of blood-flue. Due to the high demand of ducks here in Kishoreganj haor area, the ducks are being reared under the guidance of senior authorities.

According to the office sources, the target of poultry production is 12 thousand, but achieved the production is 44100. Egg production target has exceeded 86,000. The adult ducks are 600 and the under aged ducks are 350. The price of a baby (per piece) is 20 to 50 Tk seasonally. During the current financial year, about Tk 1 corer has been allocated to the regional poultry-breeding center. There are 16 posts but 4 are of them are vacant for that the farm is facing some problem.

Locals said, many unemployed in this area have returned to fate since the farm was developed. They are now earning good income by providing ducks, eggs and babies in various region of the country. Many are self-reliant.

The manager of Kishoreganj Regional Duck Breeding Farm Dr. Asma-Al-Hosneyara said the farm has become known as a new horizon for thousands of unemployed people. They will be able to build a farm in their own home. On January 11, Deputy Director of Central Chicken Farm Azharul Islam visited Kishoreganj Regional Duck Breeding Farm and gave various directions. In the meantime, as a hope for the unemployed youth, the farm is working to create employment through various training.
