Kidnapped teenager rescued after 3 days, two arrested

Police rescued a teenager from Cox’s Bazar on Monday who was kidnapped for ransom on Friday. Two members of the kidnapping gang have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The rescued teenager was identified as Mohammad Hamim, 15, son of Murul Amin, resident of Kutupalong registered Rohingya camp in UKhiya upazila.

The arrestees were identified as Parvez Mosharraf, 19, son of Hasan Ali, resident of Kacchapia Korachi Para under Baharchara union inTeknaf upazila and Nurul Afsar, 19, son of Monir Ahmed, resident of Uttar Lombori Para area in Teknaf sadar union.

Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf police station Muhammad Gias Uddin said a drive was conducted in Dakkhin Lombori area under Teknaf sadar union in the upazila on early Monday and the two kidnappers were arrested at that time. Quoting the case file, Gias Uddin said last Mohammad Hamim left home at noon to attend Jummah prayer on last Friday. On his way back after the prayer, he met a previously known young man, Mohammad Selim. Selim persuaded Hamim to accompany him to visit the Shah Porir Dwip area. As the evening passed and Hamim did not return home, his family searched for him at various possible locations but could not find any trace of him.

Later, an unidentified individual called Hamim's mother on Saturday and informed her that her son was taken hostage by kidnappers. They demanded a ransom of Tk 70,000 for his release, threatening to kill him if the money was not paid. Subsequently, the victim's mother reported the matter to Teknaf police station.

The mother of the victim filed a case in Teknaf police station on Sunday in connection with this incident.

Gias Uddin said after the police were informed about the incident, they began an operation to rescue the kidnapped individual. With the help of technology, it was possible to identify the whereabouts of the criminals. Based on this information, a police team conducted an operation in the South Lombori area of Teknaf Sadar Union early Monday morning. When they surrounded a suspicious house belonging to a man named Mohammad Faisal, four to five people attempted to flee. The police were able to chase and arrest two of them. Police operations are ongoing to arrest the other suspects involved in the case, said Gias Uddin.
