Ruling Awami League-backed white panel has won eight out of 14 posts including, president, in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections, while pro-BNP blue panel secured the other six posts, including secretary.
Former Law Minister Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru and Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal have been elected as president and general secretary of the SCBA respectively.
The voting took place on Wednesday and Thursday. A total of 5,486 lawyers out of a total 7,719 cast their votes at the SCBA auditorium. Vote counting started from Friday afternoon. The election results were announced on Friday night.
Fifty-one contestants vied for 14 posts. Justice (retd) AFM Abdur Rahman was the chief election commissioner.
Pro-Awami League lawyers Muhammad Shafique Ullah, Dr Md Iqbal Karim and Safayet Sultana Rumi have been elected to the posts of vice president, treasurer and assistant secretary respectively, while Mintu Kumar Mondal, Muntasir Uddin Ahmed, ABM Shibly Salekin, and Mahfuzur Rahman have been elected as executive members.
The five other candidates from BNP-backed panel who were elected are Jalal Uddin (vice president), Mahmud Hasan (assistant secretary), and Parvin Kawser Munni, Redwan Ahmed Runjib and Md Iftekharul Islam (executive members).
