The interim Khagrachhari Hill District Council was reconstituted and Jiruna Tripura was appointed as the first woman chairman of the district council. Fourteen other members, including three women, was also appointed as members of the district council.
A notification in this regard was issued under the order of the President, signed by Taslima Begum, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, on Thursday.
The other members of the council are Bongo Mitra Chakma (Khagrachhari Sadar), Animoy Chakma (Laksmichhari), Nitol Moni Chakma (Khagrachhari Sadar), Kongzpru Marma (Mahalchhari), Kumar Swiching Pru Sain (Manikchhari), Sathoai Pru Chowdhury (Manikchhari), Dhaneshwar Tripura (Khagrachhari Sadar), Shefalika Tripura (Khagrachhari Sadar), Prashanto Kumar Tripura (Matiranga), Md Shahidul Islam Sumon (Matiranga), Professor Abdul Latif (Panchhari), Md Mahbubul Alam (Khagrachhari Sadar), Joya Tripura (Matiranga), and Advocate Manjila Sultana (Matiranga).
The notification said that the government restructured the interim Khagrachhari Hill District Council under the powers granted by Section 16(A)(4) of the Khagrachari Hill District Council Act, 1989, and its amendments in the Khagrachari Hill District Council (Amendment) Act, 1997, as well as Sub-section 2(2) of the Khagrachari Hill District Council (Amendment) Act, 2014.
The same notification also cancels the council formed on December 10 in 2020, with Mongsui Pru Chowdhury as the chairman.
The council was formed in 2020 during the Awami League government. After August 5, the chairman and members of the council went into hiding.
As a result, all activities of the Khagrachhari Hill District Council came to a standstill for more than two months.
