Four people, including Mobarak Hossain alias ‘Kala Mobarak’, an alleged associate and key shooter of the Boro Sazzad gang, have been arrested by Chattogram District Police following a reported gunfight with police in Fatikchhari.
Police said they recovered four firearms, 23 rounds of ammunition, three magazines and several spent bullet shells from their possession.
Chattogram District Police Superintendent Md. Masud Alam disclosed the information at a press briefing held on Thursday afternoon at the District Police Superintendent’s office in the city.
The other three arrestees are Mohammad Raihan alias Raihan (40), Md. Farid (50) and Md. Nasir (52).
According to the police superintendent, a team of Fatikchhari Police conducted a raid at the house of Waz Pallan in Shah Nagar Pallanpara area of Lelang Union in Fatikchhari in the early hours of Wednesday (August 26).
Police said the suspected armed men opened fire at the law enforcers after sensing their presence. Police then returned fire in self-defence. At one point, Mobarak and the three others were arrested.
Police said Mobarak is an accused named in the case filed over the murder of Maksudul Haque Chowdhury in the city’s Pahartali area on June 13. He was also identified in CCTV footage, according to police.
SP Masud Alam said several serious cases have been filed against Mobarak, including the murders of Jamal and Saddam in Fatikchhari, Masud in Raozan and Sarwar Babla in the city.
According to police, Mobarak is a close associate of David Imon and Raihan, described by law enforcement as top criminals associated with the Boro Sazzad gang. Police also identified him as the gang’s principal shooter.
Police said arrestee Raihan is the maternal cousin of Shibir Babul.
During the operation, police recovered a foreign-made 9mm pistol, a foreign-made 7.65mm pistol, a foreign-made revolver and a locally made pistol.
Police said the 9mm pistol was manufactured in Brazil, while the 7.65mm pistol was made in Italy. Police initially suspect that the recovered 9mm pistol may be one of the government firearms looted from Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram.
The recovered ammunition included 18 rounds of 9mm bullets and five rounds of 7.65mm bullets. Police also recovered three magazines, three pistol bullet shells and four shotgun shells.
SP Masud Alam said police are investigating the source of the recovered firearms and how the weapons and ammunition came into the possession of the suspects.
The authorities are also examining the cases filed against the arrestees and their alleged links with criminal groups.
Police said legal proceedings under relevant laws are being initiated against the suspects. Investigators are also questioning the arrestees in an effort to gather further information about their activities and the source of the weapons.
