Published : 31 Aug 2022 09:18 PM

Farmers of different villages of Brahmanbaria's Nabinagar Upazila are spending busy time in jute cutting, husking, washing and drying during the monsoon season. This year the yield of jute is good as the weather and environment are favorable. J

ute production in those lands is somewhat hampered due to waterlogging in low lying areas. Although the yield is somewhat good in the higher land, the farmers are not able to rot jute due to lack of water. Due to availability of water in low-lying areas, farmers are spending busy time in rotting jute. During this season they remove the jute fibers and collect jute sticks for the whole year. Some of them profited financially by selling jute at a high price to the middlemen of different areas of the country, including the middlemen and Dhaka, in the financial crisis.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Jaglul Haider said that in 2021-22 financial year, the target of jute cultivation in 21 unions of the Upazila was 620 hectares, but 1,300 hectares have been achieved. Apart from this, farmers are interested in jute cultivation as the price of jute is good in the market. Tusha jute, Desi jute, Shaan jute and Bugi jute are cultivated in the country. Among them, Tusha Pat is the most cultivated in this area and the yield is good. This year, due to our (agricultural office's) efforts and distribution of high-yielding jute seeds, the farmers of Nabinagar are cultivating jute extensively. Due to the good price of jute in the market in this season, the farmers will be able to raise enough capital, said the jute farmers of the concerned area.

Abdul Halim, a jute farmer of Gopalpur village, said - I have cultivated jute on 2 bigha land this year, the jute has grown well. Rahim Mia, a jute farmer of Rachullabad village, said that the jute of my land has not improved in the rain. As a result, I will suffer from jute cultivation this year. At one time jute was called golden fiber, jute was sold for the price of gold. Now if jute is taken in the market, no one wants to buy it, but this year the price of jute is a little better.

Nabinagar Upazila Agriculture Department officials in this regard stated that authorities are constantly helping and advising farmers to get the best yield possible. With a combined effort from everyone, the glory of jute cultivation in this area will return.
