UNB, Chattogram: A Jubo Dal leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants at East Gujra in Raozan upazila of Chattogram district on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Jane Alam Shikdar, a former member of upazila unit Jubo Dal and a supporter of BNP nominated candidate Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury.
Belayet Hossain, superintendent of Rangunia Police, said three people, riding a motorcycle, opened fire on Jane Alam in front of his residence around 9 pm and fled the scene.
Later, he died on the way to Chattogram Evercare Hospital at night.
A tense situation has been prevailing in the area following the killing.
Witnesses said Jane Alam was standing near the gate of his residence when three youths on a motorcycle stopped nearby.
One of them reportedly fired two rounds of shots at a close range targeting his chest before fleeing the scene.
Jane Alam’s family said he had no known enmity and were unsure why he was targeted.
