JU suspends 11 students for ragging

Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities suspended 11 third-year students (47 batch) after finding them guilty of ragging a first-year student (48batch). 

An office order signed by the university's acting register Rahima Kaniz said that the university authorities expelled 11 students.  The university syndicate decided on January 9 at a virtual meeting after an investigation committee submitted their report, said a press release issued on January 28 night. The suspension is being considered effective from January 9, it added. 

The suspended students are: Md Shihab and Md Moshiur Rahman of Marketing department, Md Rizwan Rashed Soan and Md Tamim Hossain of Drama and Dramatics department, Fayzul Islam Nirob of Finance and Banking department, Shimul Ahmed of Bangla department, Alauddin Yousuf and Rozen Noor of Accounting and Information system department,  Akash Hossain of Fine Arts department, Shakil Mahmud of English department and Saroar Hossain Shakil of History department.  

According to Proctor's Office sources, some 30-35 students, including the suspended students went to the fresher’s room of Bangabandhu Sheikh  Mujibur Rahman Hall on July 22, 2019 at around 12:30 pm to give rags to the fresher’s. At one stage of giving rag, they called Faisal Alam, a first-year student, around 1.30 pm and physically harassed him. Key accused Shihab slapped him twice on the right cheek. Shortly after the second slap, Faisal collapsed with a convulsion and blood gushed from his ears. Faisal became senseless and his friends took him to the university's medical center.

Key accused Md Shihab has been suspended for two years and the rest for one year. 

These students will not be allowed inside the university area in the meantime. Besides, they have been instructed to leave Bangabandhu Hall after the expulsion order. 

JU acting proctor A S M Firoz Ul Hasan said that these students were suspended because of the ragging issue. And they were staying at  Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall without allotment, so they were expelled from the hall.
