Several hundred students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday staged demonstration on the campus protesting sexual harassment of a fellow student by a teacher.

During the protest, the students demanded exemplary punishment to Sanwar Siraj, an assistant professor of the Government and Politics Department, who allegedly sexually harassed the female student.

Under the banner of ‘Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad (BSCASP), the students formed a human chain in front of the central Shaheed Minar. Different students’ organisations like Bangladesh Students Union, Socialist Students Front, Socialist Student Front (Marxist) and Jahangirnagr Cultural Alliance expressed their solidarities with the protesting students. A procession brought out by the students also paraded around the Shaheed Minar.

The protesting students also blamed some other teachers of the department for their ill attempt of hiding the crime and saving the accused teacher. According to information, teacher Sanwar Siraj of Department of Government and Politics repeatedly offered the female student for physical relation. The victim claims that although she had submitted all the proofs of sexual harassments, former chairman of the department, Prof Shamsunnahar Khanam did not cooperate with her, rather she had tried to hide the crime.
