JU demonstrators show red card to VC

The agitating teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University displayed red card to Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam demanding her immediate resignation on Tuesday. Under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’, the demonstrators formed a human chain at Central Shaheed Minar premises around 1:00 pm on the closing day of JU admission test for academic session 2019-20.

The demonstrators declared comprehensive strike for next two days. During the strike, all administrative activities of the university, classes will be closed. However, the examinations will be exempt from the strike. Addressing the programme, spokesman of the movement Prof Raihan Rayne of Philosophy department said, "We have shown red card to the vice-chancellor and his family for their involvement in the commission scandal. Various attempts have been made to disrupt our movement. In all, we are showing red cards to the student oppressor and the corrupt vice-chancellor."

Professor Anwarullah Bhuiyan of Philosophy department said, “September 30 was the last day of the ultimatum. Now we are showing red card against the corruption, irregularities and chaos of the Vice Chancellor. The Vice Chancellor has failed miserably to manage the university. We do not want to consider such a person. If the Vice-Chancellor does not resign today, she will be forced to resign anyway."

Adib Arif, joint convenor of Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatro Odhikar Parishad of JU unit said, “The corruption news of Vice-chancellor has been published in various media. We have repeatedly asked her to do a judicial inquiry but she did not. We have given ultimatum of resignation by October 1. If she does not resign within the declared time, she will be removed through rigorous agitation."

Leaders and activists of Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance, Students’ Union, Socialist Students’ Front and Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatro Odhikar Parishad participated at the human chain.
