JS body for improvement of transportation in islands

The parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Shipping on Wednesday recommended taking measures to develop transport facilities in Hatia, Sandwip and Bhola islands. The committee made the recommendation at its 5th meeting held at Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban with committee chairman Major (retd) Rafiqul Islam in the chair, said a press release, reports BSS.

The committee underscored the need for immediate actions for the implementation of the development projects to ensure ease and safety in transportation of the people living in islands. While discussing about different ongoing projects in Chattogram, Mongla and Payra ports, it recommended taking appropriate measure to complete the projects within the stipulated timeframe.

The committee also placed a recommendation for cleaning and dredging rivers with the cooperation of water resources ministry, said the release. The meeting also recommended establishing lighthouses wherever necessary in the coastal areas immediately. Committee members – State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Shajahan Khan, M Majharul Haq Prodhan, Ranjit Kumar Roy, Mahfuzur Rahman, Dr Shamil Uddin Ahmed Shimul, M Aslam Hossen Sawdagar and SM Shahjada, among others, took part in the meeting, added the release.

Among others, Shipping Secretary, Chattogram port chairman, Mongla port chairman and officials concerned of the parliament secretariat were also present.
