Farmers across six upazilas of Jhenaidah are gearing up to produce more than 25,000 tons of garlic this season, cultivating a total of 2,690 hectares, which is expected to generate around Tk 188–189 crore in revenue. Last season, the district produced 23,490 tons from 2,515 hectares, yielding approximately 9.33 tons per hectare.

According to sources from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Jhenaidah, Shailkupa upazila accounts for the largest share of garlic cultivation, with farmers using 72 percent of their allocated land for this spice crop.

Farmer Hasan Ali, 52, from Nadpara village in Shailkupa, told reporters that they have already started sowing garlic seeds after preparing the land for saplings. “The tiny saplings will grow in about three weeks, and we will start transplanting them within a month,” he said. Hasan Ali is planting the high-yielding Barma variety, which is popular among local farmers. He expects 40 decimals of land to produce around 40 maunds, potentially earning Tk 1 lakh. After deducting the cost of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and day labor, Hasan Ali expects a net income of Tk 75,000 within three months.

Another farmer, Raushan Ali, said he expects to earn around Tk 40,000 from 20 decimals of land this season. “Although last season’s price was not satisfactory, we remain hopeful,” he added.

DAE officials stated that garlic is being cultivated across Jhenaidah Sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, bordering Moheshpur, Shailkupa, and Harinakundu, covering a total area of 2,700 hectares this season. Of this, Shailkupa farmers alone are cultivating 1,932 hectares, representing about 72 percent of the district’s garlic farming area.

Mohammad Qamruzzaman, Deputy Director of DAE Jhenaidah, said, “Shailkupa has always been the hub for garlic and onion production, contributing 72–75 percent of these crops in the district. Our farmers’ dedication and hard work are commendable. The DAE is committed to providing technical assistance and logistical support to ensure a successful harvest.”

With high expectations for both yield and revenue, Jhenaidah’s garlic farmers are preparing for a promising season that could strengthen the district’s position as a major garlic producer in Bangladesh.
