Int’l seminar on World Jellyfish Day held at Cox’s Bazar

A lot of jellyfish are found in the Bay of Bengal. Jellyfish have great food value and jellyfish are of economic importance in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. It is possible to earn foreign exchange by extracting jellyfish commercially and exporting it.

This opinion was expressed by the panelists of the international seminar titled 'Know Jellyfish, Utilize This Marine Resource' on Thursday morning. This international seminar is organized by Bangladesh Ocean Research Institute.

Director General (Additional Secretary) and Oceanographer Syed Mahmood Belal Haider was the chief guest on the occasion.

Chittagong University Fisheries Faculty Chairman Professor Dr. Md. Rashed-un-Nabi.

Special guests were Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Chief Scientific Officer of Marine Fisheries and Technology Station of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), Professor Ashraful Azam Khan of Chabir Fisheries Faculty, Associate Professor of Oceanography Faculty of Noakhali Science and Technology University Dr. M. Golam Mustafa. Besides, Professor Dr. S. Annamalai University of India. Bragadeswaran and Amita Kumari Chowdhury, Phd scholar of Lovely Professional University of Punjab and others participated in the discussion in the virtual seminar.

In the seminar, it was informed that jellyfish is not a fish despite its name. Jellyfish have existed in the world's oceans for about 5 billion years. A lot of jellyfish are found in the sea coast and deep sea of Bangladesh. The seminar discussed biology, toxins and human welfare, jellyfish bloom conservation and prospects and challenges.
