Jatiya Party co-chairman Kazi Firoz Rashid and presidium member Sunil Shuvo Roy have been relieved of party posts.
Jatiya Party Chairman Ghulam Muhammed Quader took this decision by the power bestowed upon him by the party constitution, according to a Jatiya Party press release issued on Friday.
The decision has already become effective. Nothing, however, was mentioned on why this decision was taken.
The removal came five days after it suffered a disaster in the general election.
When asked, Kazi Firoz Rashid, said “Those who took the decision know better why such a decision has been made. They have done what they thought was better. I have nothing to say.”
Kazi Firoz Rashid was the candidate of Jatiya Party from the Dhaka-6 constituency in the 12th parliamentary election, but he stayed away after Awami League did not relinquish this seat for Jatiya Party.
In the recent 12th parliamentary election, the Jatiya Party performed poorly, securing only 11 seats – its worst result since the restoration of democracy in 1991.
In the latest election, the Jatiya Party fielded candidates in 265 seats, but over 200 remained inactive during the campaign.
Thirty-one candidates withdrew before the election, and 11 more withdrew on election day due to allegations of irregularities.
The Awami League left 26 seats for Jatiya Party, and all 11 winners came from those shared seats.
