The Planning Commission has given final approval to a project worth Tk 11 crore 70 lakh 12 thousand to develop the city's Panchlaish Jatisangha Park or United Nations Park as a green park. The Public Works Department will implement the project titled 'Development of Jatisangha Green Park with modern facilities in Panchlaish residential area'. The duration of the project is from July 2022 to June 2024. Currently the park has two swimming pools and a gymnasium built in June 2015 at a cost of Tk 3 crore 94 lakh with funding from the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC). Public Works Department has written to CCC to take necessary measures to remove 2 swimming pools and gymnasium to facilitate the implementation of the project.
Chattogram Public Works Division-1 Executive Engineer Rahul Guha said that the finalization of the design is underway. Once we get the design, we can call for tenders and start the work within 4 months. We are in touch with the city corporation. After project approval I gave formal letter.
CCC Chief Engineer Md. Rafiqul Islam Manik said that the Public Works Department will implement the project and hand it over to the City Corporation. Evacuation of swimming pool and gymnasium is included in the project. The entire park will be developed with swimming pool and gymnasium space. The park will be transformed once the project is implemented. It will be filled with green. Boundary walls will be provided on all sides. Walkway will be constructed. There will be benches for visitors to sit. There will be a fountain in the middle. Lighting will be done. There will be a toilet zone. The boundary will be done with grill. So that the inside can be seen from the outside. Currently the park is about five feet lower than the surrounding road. As a result, when it rains, water accumulates there. Therefore land development cost is proposed in the project for a height of five feet. The park will have sports equipment for children and horizontal bars for exercise. There will be two metal pergolas.
It's mentioned that if the project is more than Tk 50 crore, the approval of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council or the ECNEC meeting is required for the implementation of the project. Accordingly, the implementation of the United Nations park development project will not require the approval of the General Assembly. With the approval of the Planning Commission, the implementation of the project will begin. The park is spread over an area of 2.27 acres. CCC named the Jatisangha Park or United Nations Park in 2002. The Public Works Department filed a case against CCC over ownership of the park. It is not settled yet.
