Medical experts from Japan and Bangladesh came together at the Japan–Bangladesh Healthcare Conference 2025 in Dhaka to highlight the urgent need for stronger rehabilitation services in Bangladesh’s healthcare system.
The conference, jointly organised by Generous Co., Ltd. (Japan), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the pioneering Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), was held on Saturday at the Amari Dhaka Hotel, Gulshan-2.
The event gathered physicians, rehabilitation experts, policymakers, and students to explore strategies for Bangladesh to integrate rehabilitation more effectively into its national healthcare system.
In her opening speech, Ms Miki Koyama, CEO of Generous, stressed that rehab is essential to help patients regain independence after illness or injury. Bangladesh lacks enough rehab centres and trained staff, especially outside cities. With rising cases of stroke, accidents, and ageing, the need for rehab is greater than ever.
Japan’s advanced rehab system—backed by insurance, technology, and community care—was showcased as a model for Bangladesh.
Key speakers included Dr Nazmul Hossain, Valerie Ann Taylor, and Mr Akira Ito. Speakers called for more training, investment, and policies to make rehab a core part of medical care.
The event ended with hopes for deeper Japan–Bangladesh collaboration to make rehab more accessible across the country.
