In Tangail, government primary schools, mosques, madrasas and Alipur Hat were washed away due to severe erosion of the Jamuna River.

On last Monday (August 2) afternoon, the water of Jamuna overflowed across Alipur village of Gohaliabari union under Kalihati upazila and hit all the establishments including schools, mosques, madrasas and hats within a moment.

In just 10 days, these establishments went into the river in phases. If this trend of demolition continues, the Alipur-Village will be lost from the map of Tangail soon, fear locals.

Local resident Al Mamun said that 600 meters area of Alipur was washed away in the river in just two and a half hours. Primary schools, madrasas and mosques located in this area are all destroyed. Hundreds of families of the area have been affected by the sudden onslaught of the river.

Iman Ali, Ramzan Ali, Yusuf Pramanik, Md. Moni along with Abdur Rashid informed that in an instant everything disappeared into the river before they could do anything. He did not get a chance to remove the furniture of the mosque. Only several benches of the government primary school and madrasas could be removed in time.

Abdul Khaleq, a member of Ward No. 6 of Gohaliabari Union, said two houses of Belbari Government Primary School, three houses of a local madrasa, Alipur Jame Majjid and 6-7 establishments of Alipur Hat were destroyed from Monday afternoon to evening.

Only a few benches have been removed from these institutions. The rest of the Jamuna has been swallowed. Hundreds of nearby homes and croplands are also under threat.

According to the Tangail Water Development Board (Paubo), Paubo's guide dam has been constructed in several parts of the village.

After the Guide Dam, Paubo on the left bank of the Jamuna tried to prevent the erosion by dropping about 55,000 geo-bags in an area of 300 meters. But the cyclone is coming from the south in the opposite direction of the Jamuna and is destroying houses and structures with the help of Geo Bag.

Sirajul Islam, executive engineer of the Tangail Water Development Board, said efforts were being made to prevent obstruction by throwing geobags in the area. I have already started work to break the Geo bag. I hope I can prevent breakage by working very fast.
