Jail, fine for child marriage

Chuadanga’s Jibannagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Munim Lincoln has issued a stern warning to bring all those involved in child marriage under the law, including jail terms and fines.

He gave the warning while addressing a workshop on prevention of child marriage and violence against women organized by Wave Foundation and Jibannagar Upazila Lok Morcha on Wednesday.

All the marriage registrar, imams, matchmakers and priests of the upazila were present at the workshop held at Jibannagar Upazila Parishad auditorium. They pledged at the time, that from now on, they will not conduct any child marriage. UNO SM Munim Lincoln, who was the chief guest at the workshop, said marriage registrars, matchmakers and the parents of the bride and groom would be punished with both jail and fine under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, even if they receive the news within two years of child marriage. 

Jibannagar Upazila Lok Morcha President Abul Kalam Azad presided over the workshop while female Vice-Chairman of Jibannagar Upazila Parishad Ayesha Sultana Lucky, Jibannagar Police Station OC Saiful Islam, Jibannagar Social Service Officer Md. Zakir Uddin Moral, Wave Foundation official Kamruzzaman Juddho and others spoke at the time.
