A team of researchers from the University of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CVASU) has claimed that even if someone is infected with the corona virus after taking the first dose of the vaccine, the severity of the infection is lower among them.
A seven-member research team led by CVASU Vice-Chancellor Professor Gautam Buddha Das conducted the study in Chittagong from February 7 to April 13 on the health risks of first-dose vaccinators.
However, they are analyzing more data so that the overall picture will not emerge without extensive research at the national level.
The members of the research team are CVASU Professor Dr. Sharmin Chowdhury, Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Rana, Veterinarian Tridip Das, Pranesh Dutta, Md. Sirajul Islam, Tanvir Ahmad Nizami.
The study analyzed data from 1,752 people identified as Covid-19 out of 6,146 samples tested in the CVASU lab from February 15 to April 14.
The researchers said that 200 people identified took the first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine between February 7 and April 14. Among them, corona virus was not a significant symptom of shortness of breath.
Of these, 82.5 percent (165) did not need to be hospitalized. The remaining 17.5 percent (35 people) were admitted but no serious health risks were found.
The study found that 177 (88.5 percent) of the first dose recipients of the vaccine did not have shortness of breath. 184 people did not need extra oxygen supply.
Researchers claim that the rest of the population suffers from shortness of breath and the need for extra oxygen because of "age and co-morbidity."
Gautam Buddha Das, Head Professor of the research team, said the study was conducted to understand the effectiveness of the first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
He said 165 out of 200 infected people had mild symptoms after taking the first dose of the vaccine and their sample tests showed ‘negative’ results within 10 to 12 days.
Of these, 129 (64.5 percent) had co-morbidity, 35 of whom went to the hospital, 16 of whom needed oxygen, but did not pose a serious health risk. Of these 129, there were problems with high blood pressure (36 people), diabetes (32 people), and allergies (5 people). 51 people again had multiple health problems.
Noting that only one vaccinated patients died at the hospital, CVASU vice-chancellor said, "We have learned that the 48-year-old patient already had a kidney transplant. We think that the risk of health and death will be less even if we are infected after getting the vaccine. ”
CVASU Vice-Chancellor Gautam Buddha Das said they would continue their research on what might happen after the second dose.
The study found that on average, they were infected 32 days after vaccination and the average temperature was 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Among those who did not receive the vaccine were sneezing and coughing for a long time, but some received three to seven days.
Among those who took the first dose, those who had shortness of breath did not last more than five days and oxygen saturation was at least 90 percent. On the other hand, those who have not been vaccinated have their oxygen saturation below 90 percent and shortness of breath has been observed for a long time.
Professor Sharmin Chowdhury, in-charge of the CVASU Covid-19 laboratory & research team member, said, “We found that most of those who were infected with the first dose did not have to be hospitalized. In other words, I have received information that their severity was very low and they recovered quickly. ”
He said that the research activities will continue with regular contact with the vaccinators.
Abdur Rob Masum, a senior consultant at Chittagong General Hospital, said "We know that even if someone is infected after the first dose of the Oxford vaccine, their severity will be much lower." It has also come up in the data of CVASU researchers.
"It's been seen in patients who come to our hospital," said the doctor at the General Hospital, which specializes in Covid-19.
Samples from Chittagong are tested daily in nine labs with eight in Chittagong and one in Cox's Bazar district.
According to the Civil Surgeon's Office, 47,227 people have been infected with the corona virus in Chittagong district till Monday. Considering the sample test, the total infection rate is 12.20 percent. Of these, a total of 464 people died.
