Irrigation thru GK Project pumps demanded in Chuadanga

Members of Alamdanga Krishak Jote formed a human chain on Monday last demanding irrigation through GK project Pumps.

 Shajahan Ali, general secretary of District Krishak Jote, Emdadul Hoque, Alamdanga Upazila Krishak Jote president, Abdul Malek, Alamdanga Upazila Krishak Jote general secretary, Jannatul Ferdous Usha, Mohosin Ali, Mozammel Hoque, Hasanuzzaman Ripon, Ashaduzzaman Khan, Moziron Nesa, Taposi Khatun and Tohmina Khatun addressed the human chain.  The speakers said, Boro paddy cultivation in Alamdanga upazila is dependent on GK canal water. Irrigation water is in short supply at the beginning of the season. They demanded that the irrigation pumps should be functional.

It is learnt from the human chain programme, there are about 1 lakh 97 thousand hectares of land under GK project in Chuadanga, Kushtia and Jhenaidah districts. 

Of this, Boro is cultivated on 35 to 40 thousand hectares of land and Aman on 50 to 55 thousand hectares.

It is also learnt, one of the two main pump houses at Bheramara is lying out of order since 2022. Water was being supplied through another one. After 21 days, irrigation pump again went out of order. 

In Chuadanga Sadar and Alamdanga Upazila, paddy on nearly 200 hectares of land is being dried up for want of irrigation water.
