Iran has expressed gratitude to India for its participation in the state funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, describing it as a strong gesture of respect and solidarity.
In a statement posted on X, the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi thanked the Indian government and people, saying their presence at the funeral reflected the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will never forget this gesture of friendship, compassion and heartfelt respect,” the embassy said, noting that participation by Indian officials, political leaders and representatives of various religious communities underscored enduring bilateral relations.
A high-level Indian delegation, including Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, attended the funeral and paid tributes.
Several prominent political figures and religious leaders from India also joined the Programme.
The funeral procession in Tehran drew massive crowds, with state media describing it as one of the largest public gatherings in the country’s recent history.
Authorities implemented extensive security and crowd-control measures as mourners lined the streets to pay their respects.
The ceremonies, part of a multi-day national mourning period, are expected to conclude with the burial in Mashhad, Khamenei’s birthplace.
Observers say India’s participation highlights ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries despite shifting regional dynamics.
