Investors lost a total of about Tk 2,500 crore in one week at Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) as most of the shares witnessed downtrend.

Market capitalisation of the DSE decreased by 0.47 percent to Tk 5,382 billion on Thursday over the previous week amounting to Tk 5,407 billion.

Market analysts said investors took a cautious mood injecting fresh funds into the market amid Ukraine crisis as well as the rising cost of living, which pushed the market down.

Although the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has recently written to several banks, asking them to invest in stocks in the existing capacity to support the market and for the development of the capital market, the move failed to lift the market sentiment.

Most of the investors remained worried about the ongoing crisis between Ukraine and Russia and the potential adverse impacts on the country's economy, they added.

DSEX, the key index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went down by 12.72 points or 0.19 percent to settle at 6,752, after gaining over 97 points in the week before.

The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, increased by 8.25 points to close at 2,466 and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) went up by 2.50 points to finish at 1,456.

The week's total turnover stood at Tk 39.01 billion on the prime bourse, which was Tk 38.86 billion in the week before.

The daily turnover averaged out at Tk 7.80 billion on the country's premier bourse, which was nearly 20 per cent lower than the previous week's average of Tk 9.71 billion.

Of the 385 issues traded, 264 declined, 105 advanced and 16 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Beximco was the most traded stock with shares worth Tk 4.61 billion changing hands.

It was followed by Fortune Shoes (Tk 1.24 billion), Orion Pharma (Tk 1.15 billion), BDCOM Online (Tk 1.05 billion) and Dragon Sweater (Tk 979 million).

Gemini Sea Food was the week's top gainer, posting a 17.96 percent gain, while Delta Brac Housing Finance Corporation was the worst loser, shedding 11.26 per cent.

On the other hand, the port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) saw a slight higher with its selective category index (CSCX) gaining 3.14 points in the last week to close at 11,893 points.

The All-Share Price Index (CASPI) of the CSE was also higher by 3.38 points to close at 19,824 points.
