Int’l seminar on islamic finance and sustainability held at DU

In a collaborative effort, the Department of Finance at the University of Dhaka, along with INCEIF University and the Academy of Business Professionals (ABP), hosted an International Seminar on 'Islamic Finance and Sustainability Nexus' on February 25, 2024, at the Professor Dr. Mohammed Habibullah Conference Hall, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka.

The seminar, chaired by Prof. Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Chairman of the Department of Finance, University of Dhaka, brought together experts to delve into the critical relationship between Islamic finance principles and sustainable practices.

Keynote speakers included Prof. Dr. Obiyathulla Ismath Bacha from INCEIF University, who discussed "Why the World Needs the Risk-Sharing Philosophy of Islamic Finance," and Dr. Zhang Hengchao (Ali Zhang), Assistant Professor at INCEIF University, who explored the "Dynamic Effects of Islamic Finance and Corruption on Environmental Quality in Malaysia."

Prof. Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury emphasized the ethical framework and community-centric approach of Islamic finance as a catalyst for sustainable growth. Dr. Mahmood Osman Imam, FCMA, Professor at the Department of Finance, DU, and Vice Chairman of ABP, delivered the concluding remarks, summarizing key insights and outcomes.

The seminar aimed to foster dialogue, share best practices, and identify innovative solutions for promoting financial inclusion and environmental responsibility. It underscores the growing recognition of Islamic finance as a potent instrument for achieving sustainable development goals.
