Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday inaugurated installation of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) at Unit-2 of the 2400MW RNPP. Earlier, on October 10 of last year, the premier had inaugurated the RPV at the first unit of the RNPP. The project has seen around 53 per cent financial progress and 55 per cent  physical progress. However, the overall progress of the first unit is 70 per cent. The first unit of the nuclear power plant will supply 1,200 MW power from the next year while the same amount of electricity will be available from the second unit in 2024.

The Rooppur project is being implemented by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission with the technical and financial support of Russia. The project’s construction cost, including manpower training, amounts to $12.65 billion, and 90 per cent of it is being funded by Russia.

We believe no obstacle

 can halt the progress of

Bangladesh

The government is working hard to implement the mega projects as early as possible. Construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge has already created a perception that “Bangladesh can do” and it has brightened the country’s image before the world. Besides, two other mega projects -- Karnaphuli Tunnel and Metro Rail Line-6 are also set to be inaugurated this year. Once these (mega) projects are implemented, the face of our economy will change.

The rate of electricity users enhanced to 97.5 per cent from only 47 per cent and the number of clients increased to 3.74 crore from 1 crore. Besides, the work of establishing 100 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in important places of the country is progressing rapidly. Apart from country’s people, the government will also have to provide all facilities especially electricity to the investors in Bangladesh. Therefore, the installation of RPV at Unit-2 of the 2400MW RNPP is a very important event for us.  Bangladesh has set an example by ensuring that the nuclear power is meant for peace and development. The ruling Awami League had a target to provide electricity to all and kept the promise. It is clear to all now that Bangladesh is progressing rapidly braving all odds and its development is now visible. Therefore, we believe no obstacle can halt the progress of Bangladesh.
