The alarming surge in the drug addicts around the country has always been a significant concern. Our government has been undertaking various measures throughout the years to cure and rehabilitate them. It is like a never ending battle for us but with constant support and measures we can definitely improve the scenario and bring them back to normal life.

According to the report published in this daily on Saturday, a project titled, “Expansion and Modernization of Dhaka Central Drug Addiction Treatment Center,” has been proposed to the Planning Commission. The cost of its implementation has been estimated at around Tk 167.22 crore.

Government needs to instigate

more of such projects to tackle the

monumental social problem

The main activities under the project are construction of 19,419.52 sq m drug addiction treatment and training center, renovation and upward expansion of drug addiction rehabilitation center, outdoor electrification, purchase of furniture, water supply and health provision, construction of fire prevention system and medical equipment of hospital.

It certainly is an enormous project where the government has put a lot of focus to bring the drug addicts back to normalcy. However, now to maintain the project for a long term extensive training activities on drug treatment and rehabilitation should be conducted to create specialists and skilled manpower. We should also make sure that addicts admitted in the rehabilitation centre are not abused inside and that is the reason why trained manpower is a must.

Government needs to instigate more such projects to tackle the monumental social problem. We must invest more to build quality rehabilitation centres and must collectively come together to support the recovering addicts so that they can learn to live a drug-free life.
