Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged the business people to increase people’s purchasing power at any cost. The premier came up with this call while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the month-long Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF)-2023 at Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center at Purbachal on Sunday.

Alongside export, all concerned especially traders and businessmen in all sectors must put concentration on expansion of domestic market and increasing the purchasing power of people. The world is now going through a complex situation due to Covid-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war. Economists have already sounded the alarm that if this conflict is not stopped immediately, it could lead to food insecurity in many countries especially poor and developing ones. People especially low income group and poor of many countries like Bangladesh will bear the brunt.

Some corporate houses,

dishonest millers, hoarders

and traders together are making

the essentials’ market volatile

deliberately

All countries in the world are very much anxious and apprehend that there might be a grave famine in this current year when the economic recession will be deepened. Keeping the situation in mind, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is constantly requesting the businessmen to discard their personal gain or profit and establish themselves as perfect businessmen in order to stay beside common people during this tough time.

But instead of paying heed to Sheikh Hasina’s call, some corporate houses, dishonest millers, hoarders and traders together are making the essentials’ market volatile deliberately. They are also now busy with stockpiling all sorts of essential commodities and food grains to sell them after some days at higher prices. As a result the purchasing power of common people fell sharply.

In the last 14 years, during the Awami League government, businessmen of the country ran their businesses and made profits without hindrance. As currently the businessmen of the country are free from the ‘pain of’ Hawa Bhaban and Development Wing of the PMO, they should pay heed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s call in order to expand domestic market and increase purchasing power of people during this crisis.
