Incessant rains for the past two days have paralysed normal life in Chandpur town.
The roads of the district town, particularly Cumilla Road, Truck Road, and Purana Bazar-Dokan Ghar Road, have become waterlogged due to persistent rain.
Rainwater has accumulated in numerous potholes, causing further distress to the local people.
The streets are nearly deserted, with very few vehicles and people braving the Torrential rainfall forced most people to remain indoors on Saturday.
However, hawkers, rickshaw pullers and day laborers ventured out, hoping to earn a living.
Businesses opened after 10 am, but due to the heavy rain, they were forced to close again soon. Nurul Islam, a 35-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, shared his frustration: “I can't go anywhere due to the rain. Many auto-rickshaw drivers haven't even left their homes because of bad weather.”
However, moderate rainfall has also caused massive havoc, leading to waterlogging and huge traffic jams across the capital Dhaka city.
Traffic congestion is a usual phenomenon in Dhaka city for all seasons but if it gets rains, then the situation deteriorates further.
The city’s many area also got light-to-moderate rain in the last two days that led to waterlogging on roads, lanes and bylanes, which in turn, caused severe traffic jams.
Construction work taking place on the different major roads that lie in a dilapidated condition for a long time is also deteriorating the situation.
Commuters, students and office-goers, continued to suffer immensely for hours due to rain.
Low-income people, especially day labourers, also suffered much as gridlock disrupted their normal pace of life.
Poor drainage system is largely responsible for water-logging in Dhaka city. If they drainage system is not improved as well as canals and water bodies around Dhaka city are recovered, the situation will take a serious turn.
Incessant light rains that started in the capital since Friday may decrease from Monday, according to Bangladesh Metrological Department.
Afroza Sultana, assistant meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department said that they recorded highest 223mm rainfall in Patuakhali's Khepupara in the past 24 hours till 6am on Sunday.
On the other hand, Dhaka city experienced 16mm rainfall for six hours till 12 pm today and the rains will decrease from Monday, she said.
BMD also forecast rain or thundershowers in all divisions including Dhaka of the country in 24 hours commencing 9am on Sunday.
“Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Mymensingh divisions and at many places over Rangpur, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country,” said a met office update.
Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country, according to the BMD.
