Import halt causes onion price hike in Khatunganj

Published : 13 May 2022 08:57 PM

There are many trucks with onions at the Healy border.  The price of the product has started rising due to supply crisis due to non-availability of new import permit (IP).  A large wholesale market in Chattogram, the price of onion has gone up by Tk 300 per bag in Khatunganj

Traders said that the previous import permit expired on the 5th of last month.  After that, due to non-receipt of new import permission, the importers are not able to bring the truck loaded with onions waiting at the border into the country.  Due to this, the price of onion has gone up due to supply crisis.

A search of Khatunganj, the largest consumer goods market in Chattogram, has revealed that Indian onions, which were sold at Tk 27 before Eid, are now being sold at Tk 34.  The price of domestic onion has also increased.  Earlier, domestic onion was sold at Tk 24 per kg but now it is sold at Tk 29.  As a result, the wholesale price of Indian onion has increased by Tk 300 per bag (50 kg) and that of domestic onion by Tk 250 per bag.Mohammad Idris, General Secretary of Khatunganj Hamidullah Mia Market Welfare Association, said there were rows of trucks at the border with onions.  Importers have opened LC.  But the government is yet to issue a new permit when the IP of the import permit expires on the 5th of last month.  Imported onions cannot enter the country.

The price of onion has gone up.  This problem can be solved quickly only if our government officials are a little sincere.
