A mobile court in Thakurgaon sentenced the imam of Bangrol Bujharipara Jame Mosque to six months in jail for embezzling money allotted by the Prime Minister from the mosque in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila on Tuesday.
Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Abdullah Al Mamun gave the verdict to convict Joynal Abedin, 40, son of Toaz Sheikh of Lauthuti village in Shukhanpukhuri union under Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.
According to the complaint, Joynal Abedin, the union team leader of the Islamic Foundation, listed the names of 48 mosques in the Shukhanpukhuri union of the upazila against the allocation of the mosques allotted by the Prime Minister's fund.
Among them, UP member Amjad Ali complained that he did not receive money for 6 mosques of the union. After investigating the allegations, the Lauthuti Gai Jalkha Para Jame Mosque, Sarodubi Munsipara Jame Mosque and Sarodubi Masterpara Mosque Committees in the union complained that they did not receive the full Tk 5,000. Imam of Sarodubi Munsipara Jame Mosque Abdus Sattar said that the team leader paid Tk 2,500 out of Tk 5,000 and pocketed the rest of the money.
Abdullah Al Mamun said two of the three mosques received Tk 2,500 and the other received Tk 3,500. Joynal Abedin was sentenced to six months in jail for embezzling the remaining money.
In response to the Prime Minister's announcement to tackle the Corona crisis, a grant of Tk 1.67,65,000 was distributed to 3,353 mosques in Thakurgaon district to cover the cost of mosques through the Islamic Foundation on last on May 23.
