Imam arrested for derogatory statement

An imam of a mosque in Chattogram’s Hathazari has been arrested for allegedly criticizing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and mocking the deaths of late former health minister Md Nasim and State Minister for Religion Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah MP on social media Facebook. He could not avoid being arrested in the end even after leaving the religious attire and wearing shirt and pants. 

Police have arrested the imam named Abdul Qayyum Fatehpuri. Hathazari Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masud Alam confirmed the arrest on Sunday. 

The arrested Abdul Qayyum is the son of Abdul Malek of Kashem Sikder Bari of Latif Para area of Fatehpur Union of Fatehpuri Hathazari Upazila. He was the imam of a mosque. 

It is learned that after posting on Facebook, the imam Abdul Qayyum went into hiding after getting the news of the allegations of the BCL leaders at Hathazari police station. Police raided various places including his workplace to arrest him.

Hathazari Model Police Officer in Charge. Masud Alam said that after Abdul Qayyum Fatehpuri insulted the Prime Minister on Facebook, five BCL leaders and activists including Hathazari Upazila BCL member Monaim Ahmed Suhan lodged a complaint. Besides, Upazila Chhatra League president Arifur Rahman Russell filed a defamation suit.
