The Rupganj Upazila administration conducted an eviction drive to remove illegal sand depots in Sector 4 of the Purbachal New Town area in Narayanganj. The operation began at 11 AM on Monday, led by Executive Magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saiful Islam.
During the drive, the office structures of the illegal depots—built in defiance of RAJUK’s restrictions—were demolished.
Additionally, sand from nine depots was auctioned on-site for Tk 1.5 lakh. The unauthorised Shimulia cattle market, also located in the same sector, was ordered to shut down indefinitely. Present at the scene were Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tasbir Hossain, Rupganj Police Station OC Tarikul Islam, RAJUK officials, and a large contingent of law enforcement personnel.
UNO Saiful Islam stated that, for several months, a group had been operating illegal sand businesses in Sectors 4, 13, and 14, violating RAJUK’s bans. Their activities had severely damaged roads, causing frequent accidents. Drainage systems were blocked, even leading to flooding in local schools, disrupting education. RAJUK had formally requested the upazila administration to intervene.
The offices of these depots in Sector 4 have now been demolished, and the sand auctioned. Depot owners have been instructed to remove remaining sand within 15 weeks. The crackdown will continue.
