Illegal construction continues in Tangail despite ban

Despite an official ban imposed by the Building Construction Committee, two real estate companies in Tangail — M/s Falguni Builders and BM Builders — have continued their construction work in violation of government regulations.

The two multi-storey buildings are being built near Boro Kalibari in Pardighulia Mouza under Tangail Municipality. According to land records, Falguni Builders is constructing a nine-storey building on J.L. No. 64, Khatian No. 1651, Dag Nos. 715, 716, 717 (20.80 decimals), while BM Builders is constructing a ten-storey structure on the adjacent C.S. Khatian No. 30, S.A. Khatian No. 173, C.S. Dag No. 488, S.A. Dag No. 677 (20 decimals).

The issue came to light during a public hearing by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on August 25, where complaints of irregular construction were raised. Following the hearing, ACC Commissioner (Investigation) Miah Muhammad Ali Akbar Azizi instructed the authorities to take necessary measures.

Subsequently, on September 17, Shambhu Ram Pal, Executive Engineer of the Tangail Public Works Department and Member Secretary of the Building Construction Committee, issued official letters to both companies ordering an immediate suspension of all construction work until the identified irregularities were corrected.

The inspection report submitted to the ACC found multiple discrepancies, including: failure to maintain the approved setback boundaries; Lack of a designated septic tank area; Unapproved expansion of the second-floor area, blocking access to neighbouring plots; Unverified land documents; and Absence of proper boundary demarcation, preventing verification of whether the construction matched the approved layout.

The report concluded that since initial irregularities had been detected, construction must remain suspended until proper verification of land boundaries and setbacks could be completed.

However, despite these orders, social media posts and on-site visits revealed that both companies had continued construction work.

When contacted, BM Builders owner Mridul Chandra Talukdar claimed the project had been stopped, while Ashutosh Saha’s son, representing Falguni Builders, said they had received verbal permission from the municipality — a claim that municipal authorities denied.

Tangail Deputy Commissioner, who also serves as the Chairman of the District Building Construction Committee, told reporters: “If it is confirmed that the companies have continued construction in defiance of the ban, necessary legal action will be taken following proper verification.”

The ongoing disregard for official orders has sparked concern among local residents about weak regulatory enforcement and potential risks arising from unsafe or unauthorised construction.
