A newborn baby was allegedly dead for wrong treatment by a fake doctor in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, on Saturday. Meanwhile, the maternity woman was admitted to a local hospital in an alarming state.
The victim was identified as Arjana Akter, 22, daughter of Mohammad Ali, hailed from Karnapara area of Savar. On the other hand, the main accused of this incident was identified as Parul Akter Shanta, wife of Arif Billah, and owner of Zomuna digital hospital and diagnostic center of Savar, which was shut down through a mobile court and fined Tk.50,000 for illegally operating, on February 11 last.
Shahida Begum, mother of the patient said, “We asked to a nearest pharmacy shoppers named Abul Kashem, for a gynecology doctor when delivery pain of the patient started around 7:00 am on Saturday morning. Later Abul Kashem brought Shanta Begum, along with two other young girls named Jinnat and Nasima to our house and Shanta was introduced herself as a gynecology doctor and tried for delivery for 3 hours long. In the meantime, Shanta Begum and Abul Kashem pushed around 9-10 several injection and applied wrong episiotomy on patient body.”
“At a stage Shanta and her associates fled when the patient’s bleeding start heavily after the childbirth. Later, the duty doctor declared the baby dead after taken him to Enam Medical Collage and hospital. Also, Arjana, the patient was admitted to Savar Care Hospital in an alarming condition”, she added.
When Contacted, Farzana Maksurat, gynecology surgeon of Savar Care Hospital told The Bangladesh Post, “The patient was brought in a serious condition. We found Unmethodical episiotomy on both side of patient’s source (vagina) during surgery, which is really horrific. Also, the placenta of the patient partially remained inside the body. So we gaussed that inexperienced persons tried to do patient’s delivery.”
An investigation by The Bangladesh Post revealed Parul Akter Shanta, the fake doctor; perform several cesarean surgeries on maternity woman, Dilation and curettage (D&C) without having any medical certificate, which is extremely risky. Also, she applied at least five of ‘Pitons’ Injection during Arjana’s delivery and applied unmethodical pressured by sitting on patient’s abdomen. Expert opined that the reason of the newborn death might be this kind of unmethodical pressure.
Jinnat Akter, who also participated in Arjana’s delivery admitted their crime to the Bangladesh Post that they all are non medical person who participated in this case.
Jinnat told The Bangladesh Post, “Abul Kashem, the pharmacy shoppers called over phone to go to the patient’s house for delivery. Later, we went to the house and tried to deliver baby. She, however, said, I knew that ‘Shanta madam is a doctor as well she performed many cesarean operation, D&C, MR on patient earlier into her hospital. I did not know that she is not a doctor.”
When asked, are you a nurse or do you have any medical certificate to attend the patient delivery case, she said, “No, I am only working for hospital Marketing (Clinic Broker).”
On other hand, Parul Akter Shanta, the fake doctor claimed, the death of the newborn just was an accident and she has appropriate medical certificate to performe gynecological treatment. But she failed to show any certificate to this reporter.
Dr. Md. Sayemul Huda, Health and family planning officer of Savar told the Bangladesh Post, “It was really a tragic incident. We will take proper legal action in this regards, If, anybody complaint to us.”
The official called upon everyone to be aware about patient and request to take treatment from govt. health complex of Savar. He said, “Why you be cheated by fake doctor, where government health complex provide all kind of treatment to patients totally free of cost?”
