A Human Chain formed by Pakundia Upazila Awami League to demand immediate removal of Advocate Sohrab Uddin, newly appointed as Upazila convener on Saturday (24 July). Pakundia Upazila Awami League and Organs & affiliated organizations arranged the press briefing and human chain.
Former Joint Convener of Pakundia Upazila Awami League Motayem Hossain Swapan read out a written statement at a press conference held at Pakundia Zilla Parishad Dak Bungalow. Former General Secretary of Pakundia Upazila Awami League Advocate Md. Humayun, Pakundia Upazila Freedom Fighter Commander Mezbah Uddin, District Sramik League Adviser Ataullah Siddique Masud, Former President of Upazila Krishak League Babul Ahmed, Narandi UP Chairman VP Shafiqul Islam Shafiq, Burudia UP Chairman Nazmul Huda Rubel, Sukhia UP Chairman Abdul Hamid Titu, Upazila Sramik League President Nazmul Islam Dewan and others spoke on the occasion. Speakers immediately demanded his expulsion from the post of convener. Later an hour-long human chain was held to demand his removal.
Sohrab Uddin, an alleged war criminal, was not nominated for his role in the 2019 parliamentary elections due to his anti-humanitarian, anti-independence activities.
He was nominated for the post at a meeting of the District Awami League executive committee on Thursday (July 22) evening. The meeting was presided over by District Awami League President Freedom Fighter Advocate Kamrul Ahsan Shahjahan. When Sohrab Uddin was announced as the convener after a long discussion with the Pakundia Upazila Committee after the meeting started, most of the leaders and workers of the District Awami League including Pakundia Upazila Parishad Chairman Md. Rafiqul Islam Renu strongly opposed it. The meeting was moderated by District Awami League General Secretary Freedom Fighter Advocate M.A Afzal.
