Here is how Daniel Radcliffe was ultimately cast for the role of his lifetime in ‘Harry Potter’. Based on JK Rowling’s eponymous novel series, the ‘Harry Potter’ movie franchise has grown to be one of the most commercially and critically successful media franchises of all time. Premiering in 2001, the film series has become a cultural cornerstone, inspiring the modern Hollywood cinematic franchise model, pioneering back-to-back finale film releases, and ushering in the popularity of young adult literature. More importantly, the Harry Potter series has introduced a new generation of brilliant actors — Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Yet, how was the titular character of the franchise cast?

Harry Potter is widely regarded as a literary icon, with audiences easily recognizing his round spectacles and lightning bolt-shaped forehead scar. The books and the films center around his life upon learning that he is a wizard. As he attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he discovers more about his past, including the fate of his parents and the identity of his arch-enemy. Through the eight films, until the finale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2, Harry Potter was portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, but his story of being cast in this iconic role was quite a journey.

Daniel Radcliffe made his acting debut as the titular character in the 1999 BBC drama adaptation of David Copperfield. Interestingly, Chris Columbus, the director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, happened to be watching that very show while in a hotel room one night in 2000. At the time, he had been looking for his Harry Potter, but to no avail. The search was even made more difficult by Rowling’s demand to keep her characters British.

But upon seeing Radcliffe’s performance in the television drama, veteran movie director Chris Columbus was instantly convinced that the child actor would be perfect for the role. As he recalled, “This is Harry Potter. This is the kid we've been looking for for months.” However, this idea was initially shut down by the film’s casting director due to the resistance of Radcliffe’s parents.
