‘Mujib Barsho’ is going to add many interesting features to the development of Bangladesh. Evidently, the government already has a number of projects underway, a few of which are supposed to be completed within this year, a year that has been dubbed as Mujib Year. The construction of Padma Bridge is one such project which is expected to be completed within Mujib Barsho. However, another such admirable initiative has been undertaken by the government, i.e. the construction of some 68,000 houses for the poor people living in rural areas.

We highly appreciate this effort to rehabilitate the poor though such a massive construction undertaking. Since the work will be carried out in the remote areas of the country this will have especial impact on areas where the light of development has not reached yet to the fullest extent. This will create much needed housing opportunities for the deprived, roofless, poverty-stricken people of village areas.

Another highlight of ‘Mujib Barsho’ is that in the next 365 days, about 5,000 bridges will be constructed to ease communication between the divisional cities and districts and villages. These construction works will surely help develop the country the way the government desires.

According to sources, 200 shelters will be constructed in areas which are prone to disaster. This shows the additional level of safety that the government has thought of for the protection of the people. This will especially come to help if there is any flooding around the country and will help counter the level of losses to property that follow suit during such calamities.

As the total project cost is estimated at Tk 40,18,74,680, the sheer magnitude of the project can be understood from the figure. The authorities concerned should ensure that no money is wasted through any unfair means. Also, a project is only as effective as the time frame set to complete it in. Thus, timely implementation of the mass housing project should be ensured to take another step towards becoming a developed nation.
