A housewife was injured in a knife attack by her husband at Nawabganj upazila in Dhaka. Later, she died allegedly due to wrong treatment at a local hospital. The deceased was identified as Nurjahan Akter, 34, wife of Arfan Ali of Bibir Char area under Kolakopa union of Nawabganj upazila.
The family members and relatives alleged that Nurjahan died on Thursday after receiving wrong treatment at Paragon Hospital and Trauma Centre at Bagmara area of Nawabganj. According to the relatives, Nurjahan’s husband Arfan Ali stabbed her in the stomach at his house over a minor issue on Monday. When her relatives learned of the incident, they brought her to the Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex.
Later, she was then taken to the Paragon Hospital and Trauma Centre where Dr Kamruzzaman Kanchan Chowdhury operated on Nurjahan Akter. But further investigation revealed that Kamruzzaman is a medical officer at the Upazila Health Complex and he does not have the qualifications to operate on patients.
After Nurjahan’s condition deteriorated, she was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the on duty doctors said that her surgery was carried out incorrectly. She was declared dead at 6:30 pm on Thursday. Sumi Akhter, sister of the victim, said that Nurjahan died due wrong treatment and malpractice of doctors of Paragon Hospital and Trauma Centre.
Deputy General Manager of Paragon Hospital and Trauma Centre Deputy Sakhayat Hossain Bappi said, ‘Nurjahan’s operation took place at our hospital but she was later taken home. We do not know what happened to her after that.’ Dr Md Shahidul Islam, an official of Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex, said that the incident is unexpected.
“If it is proved that Nurjahan Akter died from wrong treatment, legal action will be taken against the hospital and the doctor,” he said. Sub-Inspector (SI) of Nawabganj Police Station Munshi Ashikur Rahman confirmed Nurjahan’s death and said that a case has been filed in the this connection. “We are investigating the matter. We will take legal action in this connection,” said the SI.
