A housewife, 22, was gang-raped threatening with weapons at Brahman Village in Dakshin Banigram Union of Kanaighat Upazila in Sylhet on Wednesday night during heavy rains.
The housewife has been admitted to the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) of Sylhet Osmani Medical Hospital. Preparations are underway to file a case in this regard.
According to locals, the victim’s husband is a low-income man, who has a small shop in Gachabari Bazar of the upazila.
He could not return home due to heavy rain on Wednesday night while, Azad, 25, son of Nuruddin of the same village and his accomplices (masked men) broke into his earthen house.
Threatening the housewife with weapon they blindfolded and violated her. Although, the housewife was shouting at the time neighbours could not hear her due to the rain.
Victim’s husband said, his wife could recognize one of the rapists as next door neighbour Azad, Nuruddin's son. The rapists also looted some of their belongings, ge added.
However, a local source said that as the housewife is a member of a poor family, a group of influential people are trying to settle the matter through local arbitration.
Although there are multiple allegations against Azad, including theft, robbery and rape, no one is taking action against him due to the influential people.
