Domestic solar connections for generating electricity from such green energy has been a huge advantage in the recent past. Production of such rooftop renewable energy from solar panels is being promoted by the government as it now mandates household owners to install solar technology to produce, though limited, electricity for home consumption.

It has both economic as well as environmental benefits. It produces power in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner, thus more and more people prefer to use solar. The biggest benefit is when the solar panels produce extra electricity the home users can sell the electricity to the national grid line and enjoy a rebate from the total electricity bill. This way many household owners are increasingly producing extra amount of the electricity to sell to the national grid and enjoy the benefits.

The existing rule for home-based solar technology made it mandatory for consumers to install permanent rooftop panels at their holdings for getting new connections. In current market prices, the minimum cost of setting up such a panel is between Tk50,000 and 100,000, depending on the quality. The idea of mandating use of solar was to make sure that consumers generated at least 5% of their demand on their own from the renewable source before they are awarded fresh connections.

In that way, the government wanted to promote the use of renewable sources of energy and ease pressure on the traditional non-renewable sources. While it has huge popularity in the urban places mostly on apartment rooftops where the solar panels are being increasingly used to generate electricity, it is also popular in the rural areas where it has made it possible to enlighten places where it was dark before.

Since the inception in 2003, about 3.8 million solar home system (SHSs) have been installed that generate a total of 135MW of electricity and benefit 13 million people.
