Hilsa production increases in Chattogram

Published : 25 Jul 2022 08:51 PM

Hilsa is being caught in large quantities in Chattogram.  The city's Fisheryghat, the largest fish landing center is now bustling.  The Fishery Ghat is now full of fishermen.  Fishermen have been returning to the city's fish landing center with hilsa fish in their boats since Monday morning.

It was seen that the fishermen are crowding the shore with boats full of hilsa going to fisheryghat on Monday morning.  The work of the fishermen begins when the trawlers gather on the shore.

It is known that small and big fish are being sold at Fisherighat for 25-27 thousand taka.  Besides, 25-30 thousand taka per head of large size hilsa.  Hilsa weighing 400-500 grams is being sold at five hundred to six hundred taka per kg.

One kg of hilsa is being sold at 800-1000 taka.  Almost every trawler is selling hilsa worth Tk 4-5 lakh per trip.  These hilsa are being marketed in different parts of the country by the exporters in trucks from Fisherighat fish farm.

Besides, a lot of hilsa is being caught in Kattali, Sitakunda and Patenga coastal areas of Chattogram.

Hilsa production in Chattogram has increased by about 487 tons in the last one year.  In the last financial year 2020-21 hilsa was caught 6956.63 tons but in 2021-22 hilsa was caught 7443.62 tons.

Hilsa was available in Chattogram 5683.71 tons in the last financial year 2019-20.  According to this, about 1 thousand 760 tons of hilsa have been found in the span of two years.  This shows how the production of hilsa is increasing.  And production is not only increasing;  Large size hilsa is also available.  After the official ban of 65 days, fishing has started again in the Bay of Bengal from last Saturday night.

Experts say, hilsa is our national fish.  It has a special role in the economy.  Therefore, in order to maintain the continuity of hilsa production, in addition to continuing the ongoing projects, various initiatives must be taken involving the fishermen.  More incentives should be given to genuine fishermen.  Only then will you get more benefits in the future.

Chattogram District Fisheries Officer Farhana Lovely said that the production of hilsa is increasing day by day due to various initiatives of the government.  Banning hilsa collection, transportation, marketing, stocking, buying and selling for 22 days during the breeding season brings good benefits.  And from November to June, these eight months Jatka fishing is closed and the 65-day ban on fishing in the sea also increases the size of the hilsa.  All in all, if the ongoing initiatives taken in hilsa production are maintained, hilsa will be available as expected.

Earlier, result of arbitrary hilsa extraction and indiscriminate killing of jatka, hilsa production in Chattogram like other parts of the country fell to the bottom.  The production of fish is reduced at an alarming rate as a result of the hunting of hilsa with eggs in particular.  However, as a result of various initiatives of the government, hilsa production has been gradually increasing for several years.

Deep sea fishermen said that there is a lot of hilsa fish in the sea now.  We managed to cast a small net on each trawler and got about 3,000 fish.  I can sell Tk 3-4 lakh.  Our trawlers are netting more fish due to good weather.

They said that Indian trawlers have come to the Bangladeshi border and caught fish due to the 65-day blockade in our country.  If this blockade was given together with India, we could catch more fish.

A shopkeeper of Fisherighat said that this is the full season of hilsa.  Hilsa is being caught a lot in different coasts of Chittagong in Bay of Bengal due to Jo.

The hilsa that is being caught is being sent to different parts of the country from Fisherighat.  Apart from this, buyers go and buy fish from the boat themselves.  Fishermen are getting cash by selling fish
