A low-pressure system has developed over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas, triggering forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of Bangladesh.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the impact of the system is expected to be felt for 72 hours starting 5:00 PM Thursday, with significant rainfall likely in the divisions of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet.
Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir warned that very heavy rainfall could lead to landslides in hilly districts such as Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar.
Urban areas in Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram may also face temporary flooding or waterlogging due to the intense rainfall.
Rainfall ranging from 44 to 88 mm in 24 hours is categorized as heavy, while amounts exceeding 88 mm are considered very heavy.
Ports on Alert
The low-pressure system is likely to intensify, creating a steep pressure gradient over the Bay. This could result in squally or gusty winds affecting maritime ports and adjacent coastal regions.
As a precaution, the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been instructed to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain near the coast and proceed with extreme caution until further notice.
The Met Office will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary.
