Heavy rain continues, landslide apprehended in Cox's Bazar

Incessant, heavy rainfall has been continuing in Cox's Bazar district with the apprehension of a landslide in the hill areas. 

Meteorological Department of the district, however, has asked to hoist cautionary signal number-3 in port areas as 270 millimetres of rainfall has been recorded in the district during last 24-hour on Wednesday.  

The normal lives of people of the district are on the verge of collapse due to water-logging and flash floods from the hills. Most of the streets of the town including the main street of Cox's Bazaar town has been inundated by rainwater.  

Due to accumulated cloud over the northern part of the Bay of Bengal as the Monsoon is active, local Meteorological office asks Cox's bazar, Chattogram, Mongla and Payra sea-ports to hoist cautionary, local signal number-3. Due to the impact of the Monsoon, heavy rainfall is continuing over Cox's Bazar from Tuesday. 

The heavy rainfall has also caused unprecedented water-logging in various places of the district. The main street of Cox's Bazar town has been inundated in the knee to waist-deep water since entrances of all adjacent drains beside the road have been blocked completely with  garbages, mainly plastic products, empty bottles and polythene creating an obstruction in the removal of water into Bak Khali river, informed Rashedul Majid, Chief Executive of Environment Peoples. 

Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury, Panel Mayor of Cox's Bazar Municipality informed, waterlogging has been created in many places of the town since rainwater failed to extract through the drains. Water has reported entering in many houses and business establishments of the town.  

However, he mentioned, the staff of Municipality were working to clean the blockage of the drains so that accumulated water in removed as soon as possible. 

MA Zahed Chowdhury, President of Chokoria Press Club informed, the incessant rainfall has created water logging in some areas of Chokoria. 

Water in the river Mata Muhuri was increasing due to the huge accumulation of water in the river from surrounding areas. Soyeb Sayeed, a Journalist of Ramu informed water in Bak Khali river at Ramu is also being increasing. 

Tareque Bib Osman Sharif, Chairman of Kalarmarchhara Union Parishad of Moheshkhali informed, he was warning the people living in hills through microphones about the possible fatal consequences of landslide and requesting them to move in safe places.   

Mostaque Ahmed, President of Cox's Bazar Shops owners Federation informed, many traders of the district were counting a huge loss as water entered into their business establishments.  

Abdur Rahman, Assistant Meteorologist of Cox's Bazar informed, the Cox's Bazaar Meteorology Department recorded 270 mm of rainfall during last 24-hour and such rainfall is likely to continue till Thursday. 

The heavy rainfall may cause landslide in the hills. All Upazila Nirbahi Officials have been asked to warn the people living in the hill regions through the microphones to shift their locations to safer places , he added.
