Heat wave brings broiling condition

A moderate heat wave has continued blistering across the country, paralysing life and causing various diseases. As the heat is bringing broiling conditions to many areas in the country, the risk of heatstroke also continues to rise. Apart from heat stroke, various diseases like diarrhoea, viral fever, and jaundice have increased in the capital Dhaka and elsewhere in the country due to the scorching heat and contaminated water.

People especially elderly persons and children are the worst sufferers of these diseases. Hospitals and clinics in capital Dhaka, other metropolitan cities, district towns and upazila headquarters have been experiencing almost double the pressure of patients than usual, according to our correspondents’ reports.
However, people living in urban areas got a little respite from the agony of load shedding with much improvement in the power-supply situation.

Experts continue to warn that these heat waves may become more regular and last longer in the future all over the country. This does not only include heatstroke but also problems associated with breathing difficulties. As sweltering summer heat waves become the norm, health experts are warning people particularly young children, the elderly, and others at greater risk for heatstroke and other problems associated with excessive heat exposure about the importance of staying cool.

The ongoing heat wave is also claiming the lives of thousands of fish at different places in the country. According to Met Office, the ongoing mild to moderate heat wave sweeping over Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions may continue in the next couple of days. Weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country. Day and night temperature is likely to remain nearly unchanged over the country, it said, adding rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.
