HC upholds 14-year jail of ex-DIG Mizan

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday upheld a lower court judgment, sentencing former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman to 14-year imprisonment in a graft case.

A High Court division bench of Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah pronounced the judgment, dismissing an appeal filed by the former DIG against the lower court verdict.

Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 on June 21, 2023, convicted and sentenced Mizanur Rahman in the case lodged for amassing illegal wealth. The court also sentenced Mizan's wife Sohelia Anar Ratna, his younger brother Mahbubur Rahman and nephew Mahmudul Hasan to seven-year jail each in the case.

The court sentenced Mizan to three-year rigorous imprisonment under section 26 (2) and six-year rigorous imprisonment under section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004. He was sentenced to five years jail under section 4 (2), 4 (3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.

The judgment said the sentences of all the jail terms will run concurrently. All the assets of Mizanur Rahman amassed through corruption should be seized, it added. 

Anti-Corruption Commission director Manjur Morshed filed the case on June 24, 2019, against four for amassing illegal wealth of Taka 3.28 core, concealing information about wealth of Taka 3.07 crore. The ACC filed charge-sheet against them on January 30, 2020, and the court on October 20, 2020, framed charges against them.

Twenty-seven witnesses out of total 33 testified in the case.
