The High Court on Sunday set aside the contempt of court petition against National Citizen Party (NCP) chief organiser (north) Sarjis Alam over facebook post centering a court order.

The HC bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Sayed Jahed Mansur passed the order after hearing the petition.

On May 24, Md Jashim Uddin, a Supreme Court lawyer sent a legal notice to Sarjis as he uploaded a post on his social networking site Facebook about a Supreme Court order which is stated as ‘disrespectful’ and ‘demeaning’.

It also asked Sarjis to seek apology to the justice in written statement and submit it to the registrar general of the Supreme Court.

Getting no response from the notice, Advocate Jashim filed a contempt of court petition against Sarjis.

Deputy Attorney General Shafiqur Rahman and Assistant Attorney General Ikramul Kabir represented the state.

Details of the observation will be known after getting the full text of the court order, said advocate Md Jashim Uddin and he also hinted to go for an appeal petition after getting the full verdict of the copy.

On May 22, the High Court dismissed a writ petition that sought a directive against administering the oath of office to BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), clearing the way for his swearing-in.

After the court order, Sarjis, on his facebook page gave a status saying ‘‘If a mob can be created to get a verdict from the High Court, then what is the need for this High Court?’
