The High Court has commuted the death penalty of a convict named Shakila Jahan Moriom alias Khuki to life-term imprisonment in a case filed over murdering her step-daughter Sadia Alam Joya in 2015.
The HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Ahmed Sohel delivered the verdict on Tuesday (March 22) after holding hearing on the death reference and jail appeal of the convict.
According to the case statement, Khuki hacked Joya, 14, to death while the latter was in sleep on June 13 in 2015. Joya’s biological mother Farjana Islam Swapna filed the case with Tongi Police Station and later Khuki was arrested.
Police on February 2 in 2016 filed charge-sheet in the case and Gazipur District and Sessions' Judge AKM Enamul Haque on July 31 in 2016 sentenced Shakila Jahan Moriom alias Khuki to death.
The lower court concerned as per procedure sent the death reference of the case to the High Court for its approval and the convict too filed an appeal against her sentence. After holding hearing on the matter, the High Court came up with its judgement.
