Hawkers, illegal parking taking over N’ganj city: Ivy

Hawkers and illegal perking being operated with the help of influential people including people representatives has grabbed the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), its Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy said.

Ivy reprimanded the intention of people's representative for collecting toll from the illegal transport stands and hawkers on daily basis

“I know the name of all those are involved and behind extorting money from street shops and transport parking but I don’t want to disclose it,” she said on Wednesday.

The Mayor was addressing the councilors and civil society members at Ali Ahmad Chunka Auditorium at the NCC’s budget announcement ceremony.

Ivy said “I want Bangabandhu road footpath remain hawker free but the other people representative wants hawkers sit there and make hindrance to pedestrian and trucks will move at the legal truck stands but the other wants truck stands must stay at Mondolpara area at Bangabandhu road in view of collecting extortion from the transports.”

She also questioned, “How the illegal transport stands remain in front of the Rifle Club where a lawmaker frequently sits and meets with people? There is no space to walk on the road in Siddhirganj area. Everybody knows who shelters them but none to utter it”.

The Mayor mentioned that she informed the intelligence branch with the document of Tk 20 receipts in the name of City Corporation but she didn’t issue the receipt so how it was made and running.

It is mentionable that to re-habitat the footpath hawkers’ city corporation have constructed almost 800 small shops and allotted among the genuine hawkers but the hawkers left those shop giving rent again to run their business on footpath. 

To invest a large amount of money City Corporation have constructed a permanent truck terminal at Panchavati area but truck owners plying their transports at Mondolpara on Bangabandhu road.
